In one of my recent board meetings, a team lead shared something that resonated with everyone in the room: “Every day feels like a battle just to stay on top of things.” He spoke of juggling competing demands, managing shifting priorities, and constantly striving to meet impossible standards. He was driven, but underneath it all, there was fear—fear of missing deadlines, of not meeting expectations, of falling short.
Then, someone from across the room called out, “Have some courage!”
Courage? What does it really mean to “have courage”? In moments like these, courage is often mistaken for just powering through, for pushing ourselves even harder. But courage is nothing if it’s only rooted in fear. Real courage requires something deeper: faith. Faith in our purpose, faith in our vision, and, most importantly, faith in ourselves.
Most people spend too much time battling both external negativity and their own inner doubts, often without acknowledging these fears directly. Successful people, however, understand that they alone are responsible for creating a positive, growth mindset—one where they consciously build inner strength and self-affirmation.
True success is a choice. It’s about nurturing a mindset that empowers us and fuels our goals. So, the real question becomes: how can we create that inner environment to make our success inevitable?
Here’s what I’ve found to be most effective in creating that inner environment for success:
Step 1: Define your ideal reality
Define how you would want your life to be in the future: What are the things you would like to have? How would your relationships be? What would you be doing? What kind of human being would you be? Make a long list of this ideal reality and boil it down to the ones most important to you.
Step 2: Visualise your ideal reality – every day
Spend time every day visualising that your ideal has become the reality. For some people, writing it down works better in helping them absorb this reality. The important thing is to allow your emotions to be involved in visualising this reality. You need to remind your emotive and hence your subconscious self how much you want this reality.
Step 3: Affirm your ‘being’ – every day
The next step is to create the images and words for success and positive results in our minds. An exercise I recommend for affirmations is to create your list of ‘I AM’ statements based on your ideal reality and repeat these to yourself at least once every day.
There is enough scientific evidence now to corroborate the positive consequences of encouragement and the negative consequences of derision. We are unfortunately in a world where people do not hesitate to correct and put down others. Even more unfortunately, we do this to ourselves all the time too. An exercise of positive affirmations helps negate some of these influences and builds our own ability to accept that we can be part of the ideal reality. You can curate your thoughts every day to take control of your destiny.
Step 4: Act towards your ideal reality
This is often the step that most people who believe that the universe conspires to work for you forget. You still need to do the work. There was once a devout man who did not know how to swim. As chance would have it, he fell overboard on a trip abroad a cruise ship—luckily wearing a life jacket. He avidly started praying for help. A couple of hours later, a small fishing boat came up to him, and the fisherman offered to help. The man replied, “I’m fine; my God will save me!” Puzzled, the fisherman paddled away.
This happened again twice, and the man’s response was the same, “I’m fine; my God will save me!” After hours of paddling in the icy cold water, he died. Being devout, of course, he went straight up to heaven. His first question to God was, “I have been devout all my life and always believed in you. Why then did you not help me when I was dying and praying for help?” God replied, “Well, I did send three boats!”
Faith doesn’t mean waiting passively; it means taking purposeful action while trusting in the journey.
