To enhance the financial acumen of business leaders and drive sustainable success, it is essential to grasp the nuances of the ‘business’ side of operations, which encompasses finance and the language of money. Rather than relying on luck, leaders should prioritise honing critical business skills. But how can you elevate your financial mastery and, in turn, become a more informed and effective leader?

Several fundamental financial concepts converge to provide valuable insights into a business’s performance. By amalgamating insights from various facets of financial statements, business leaders can identify key metrics and objectives that are pivotal for improvement. Today, I will share a few thoughts on how to improve cash generation.

How to improve cash generation

A business with strong operating profitability and consistent cash flow is likely to be valued higher than one which does not have these defining characteristics. To improve its ability to generate cash, the business needs to implement processes to consistently and accurately measure operating profitability and how operating profits and cash move to ensure that there are no diversions and leakages of cash and that cash flow remains consistent.

Next, management needs to focus on consistently maintaining and increasing operating profitability with decision-making focused on the business’s bottom line.

You also need to explore how the business could create and build recurring revenue streams to allow it to achieve consistency of revenue and, therefore, cash. Suppose the business does not have ongoing contracts and subscriptions that keep its customers returning repeatedly. In that case, it needs to consider how it could change its value proposition to allow for recurring revenue and returning customers.

Practical Ways to Generate More Cash

Here are six practical ways a business can generate more cash:

  1. Improve Sales and Revenue: Increasing sales through marketing efforts, expanding the customer base, or introducing new products and services can boost cash flow.
  2. Reduce Operating Costs: Carefully review and trim unnecessary expenses, negotiate better deals with suppliers, and optimise processes to lower operating costs.
  3. Efficient Inventory Management: Minimize excess inventory and adopt just-in-time inventory practices to free up cash that may be tied up in unsold goods.
  4. Accelerate Accounts Receivable: Promptly collect outstanding invoices and establish efficient credit and payment terms to accelerate the inflow of funds from customers.
  5. Extend Accounts Payable: Negotiate favourable terms with suppliers to delay payments without harming relationships, allowing your business to keep cash longer.
  6. Consider Financing Options: Explore financing alternatives like business loans, lines of credit, or equity investment to infuse cash into the business for growth or working capital needs.
