How Every Business Owner Should Approach Holidays with the Right Mindset

If you run a business, one of the first things that you usually give up is taking any holidays. This is a common sign that a business is still young and in the infancy stage. However, not taking any holidays at all is not healthy and can be a tell-tale sign that something is wrong or that you could do with some help. 

Holidays are great and they can be a tool to help you grow your business if they are planned and structured the right way. If you are worried when about to leave for a holiday as a business owner and if the ‘rest’ you got evaporates within 24 – 48 hours when you return from your holiday, then you need to do something differently.

Holiday Impact 

Does your business perform as well or better when you are on holiday? When you are away, have you empowered your team to handle the business and make decisions? 

With the case study that Shweta is analysing, the business exceeded the targets for the month that the business owner was away. In fact, it was one of their top 3 months in terms of performance this year so far.  

What are the Holiday Issues? 

What insights did you gather from being away? Did the business face a challenge that needed your attention while you were away? Note, even when a business owner is away, (s)he must remain reachable to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in case of challenging issues or emergencies. Yes, a holiday is for you to rest and recharge but not a time to abdicate and leave your business alone. Holidays are designed to be a break from your day-to-day activities. To move from “doing” to “being.” To soak it all in and relax. No business owner can relax if (s)he totally shuts down on an essential part of their life which is the business that they manage daily. 

One of the pieces of advice that Shweta had given the client was to have her Senior Leadership Team share weekly updates every Friday. This allows a business owner to rest, knowing that you get an insight into the business by Friday. 

Whenever you go on holiday, you need to take note of the most critical issues that arise, so that you can create a system that fixes it and resolves the problem permanently.

What ideas, thoughts and insights will you return with from your Holiday? 

Here are a few questions that you should ask yourself on every holiday; 

  1. What do I need to start doing? 
  1. What do I need to stop doing? 
  1. What do I need to so better? 

The idea is to really question what you have been doing and to seek better ways to do them. 

Always remember when you are away (or planning to be away), you need to consciously decide to change your thinking, break your regular patterns, be the person you really are and think thoughts that will drive you to achieve your goals.
