Hey there, leader! Let’s talk about your management approach and how it’s influencing your team’s success.

Don’t worry, we’re here to support and guide you, not criticise. Our goal is to help you grow and become an amazing leader who inspires and motivates your team to reach new heights.

By examining your management approach, we can work together to develop strategies that will help you build trust and boost collaboration. For more information to finetune your leadership skills, you can check out our previous article Master the ABCs of Great Leadership.

In this article, we’ll explore your strengths and weaknesses, communication style, and conflict resolution techniques to identify areas for improvement. Let’s dive in and discover how you can become the leader you’ve always wanted to be!

The Micromanager: You Keep Control

I get it – you have high standards and you want everything to be done in a specific way. You’re meticulous and detail-oriented, and you like to double-check to ensure everything meets your expectations. Your commitment to excellence is admirable, however, I want to point out that this approach can sometimes have unintended consequences.

Here are some potential downsides to consider:

  • Missed opportunities for innovation: When team members are too afraid to share their ideas or take risks, you might miss out on innovations and solutions that your team can come up with.
  • Burnout from excessive control: When you’re too focused on controlling every aspect of a project, your team members can feel overwhelmed and undervalued.
  • Low morale from team members: Micromanaging can send the message that you don’t trust your team to do their jobs, which can lead to resentment and demotivation.

I’m not saying you should let things slide or compromise on quality. But perhaps there’s a balance that could be attained? By giving your team a bit more independence and trusting them to do their jobs, you might be amazed at the creativity and innovation that can emerge.

The Hands-Off Boss: You’re a Delegator!

You give your team lots of freedom, which is great! But sometimes they might need a little more guidance. Here’s what can happen when you’re too hands-off:

  • Confusion and uncertainty: Without clear direction, your team might feel lost or unsure about what’s expected of them. This can lead to mistakes, missteps, and a whole lot of frustration.
  • Missed deadlines: Without regular check-ins, projects can fall behind schedule. This can lead to a domino effect, impacting other teams, clients, or even the entire business.
  • Stagnant company growth: When you’re not checking in regularly, it can be easy for team members to put off tasks or lose focus. This can lead to delayed projects and a lack of ownership.

Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting you become a micromanager, but finding a balance between freedom and guidance can help your team thrive. Let’s explore ways to find that sweet spot and help your team succeed!

The Balanced Leader: You’re a Rockstar!

You can find that sweet spot between guidance and freedom and your team loves you for it! Here’s what happens when you lead with balance:

  • Enhanced collaboration and productivity: When your team feels trusted and empowered, they work together seamlessly. They’re productive, efficient, and actually enjoy coming to work! Your team works as a well-oiled machine, and it’s beautiful to see.
  • Increased trust and motivation: Your team feels seen, heard, and trusted. They know you believe in them, and that motivates them to go above and beyond. They’re more engaged, committed, and passionate about their work.
  • Improved creativity and innovation:   It is important to support innovation by encouraging your team to have an, Entrepreneurial Mindset and Embrace Creativity so they won’t be afraid to try new things, share ideas, and think outside the box.

You’re creating a work environment that’s truly special – one where your team can grow, learn, and thrive. You’re making a real difference in the lives of your team members, and that’s the mark of a truly exceptional leader.
