Boats Vs Trains

Business owners and employees have clearly defined roles, but the distinction between the two goes far beyond just the tasks they perform.

As a business owner, you carry the weight of something far greater: the responsibility of seeing the big picture. It’s not simply about executing tasks – it’s about guiding your team towards a larger goal. Your ability to create a clear vision and steer your business in the right direction is what ultimately defines your success.

Now, let’s put this into perspective: Think of it this way – employees are like trains, bound by tracks and a fixed path, while business owners are like boats, navigating an open sea with endless possibilities. Let me explain why…

The Train – Steady but Set in Its Tracks

Imagine a train. It’s a powerful, reliable machine that operates within well-defined parameters. For it to succeed in its journey, several factors must be in place:

  • A Clear Destination: The train needs to know where it’s headed.
  • Fixed Tracks: There’s no room for deviation – no matter how much the engine pushes, the train can only move along the tracks laid before it.
  • The Right Team: A skilled driver, conductor, and a supporting crew are essential to keep things running smoothly.
  • Regular Stops: Refuelling and maintenance are required to ensure the journey continues uninterrupted.

Employees, much like this train, are tasked with operating within a set framework, following a clear structure to reach defined goals. However, it’s the business owner who sets the course, builds the tracks, and makes sure everything stays on track.

The Boat – Navigating the Open Sea of Opportunities

Now, picture a boat on the open sea. Unlike a train, there are no tracks to follow. There’s freedom, but with that freedom comes responsibility. The boat – just like the business owner – must be guided by the captain, with an unwavering direction in mind.

For a boat to successfully reach its destination, several key things need to happen:

  • A Clear Destination: The captain must know where they want to go, just as you, as a business owner, must have a clear vision for your company.
  • Harnessing External Forces: The wind, the waves – these represent opportunities. Your goals, like the sails of the boat, must be set high enough to catch the winds of opportunity, propelling you forward.
  • Letting Go of Anchors: An anchor weighs a boat down, just as past mistakes, outdated frameworks, or limiting beliefs can weigh down your business. Letting go of these ‘anchors’ is critical to ensuring forward momentum.

Unlike the train, the boat’s path is not predefined. It requires constant recalibration, a captain who’s clear on their direction, and the ability to harness whatever external factors come their way.

Are You the Captain of Your Boat?

As a business owner, think of yourself as the boat’s captain. You’re  responsible for setting the course, adjusting the sails, and ensuring the boat moves forward. Your team, on the other hand, are your trusted crew, helping you navigate the seas and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

To gauge how well your business is navigating, ask yourself these questions:

  • Have you clearly communicated the destination to your team?
  • Do your team members have the tools and knowledge to execute the plan?
  • How often do you review your progress and adjust your course if needed?
  • Are you treating your business like a train, with tightly controlled systems, or are you allowing your business to explore and adapt like a boat?

The Power of Simplicity – A Lesson in Leadership

There’s an old story about a famous ship’s captain who had a simple routine every morning. He would lock himself in his quarters, open a small safe, and gaze at a piece of paper for a moment before starting his day. Curious, the crew speculated whether it was a treasure map or a letter from a lost love. When the captain passed away, the first mate couldn’t resist looking inside the safe.

What did he find? Four simple words: “Port Left, Starboard Right.”

These simple instructions were the captain’s guiding principles. They cut through the complexity and kept the captain focused on what truly mattered. In business, it’s easy to get bogged down in the noise. Sometimes, the simplest approach – knowing where you’re headed and sticking to the basics – is the most effective.

Setting Sail for Success

The sea is vast, and your opportunities are endless.

Learn how to sail your boat correctly, and you can go anywhere you want in the world. Your business, like a boat, can chart its own course – moving forward with clarity and purpose – if you have a clear destination, a plan for seizing opportunities, and the courage to leave behind what no longer serves you.
