Overwhelmed by a Big Target? Try This 1% Rule

If you’re a business owner, setting goals is part of your DNA. You’re constantly thinking about where you want your business to go — financially, operationally, strategically. And of course, you set goals for your team too.

But here’s what most people miss: your job doesn’t stop at setting the goal. Your responsibility is also to break that goal down into manageable, bite-sized chunks. Because while the target might feel exciting to you, for your team, a big number can quickly turn into something overwhelming — like a monster looming overhead.

Why Big Goals Often Backfire

A big number can look inspiring on a whiteboard. But if your team can’t see how they’re supposed to actually get there, the excitement will fade quickly.

Take this common example: You decide to increase your annual sales by £500,000.

On paper, it’s a clear and measurable target. But to your team, it might feel completely out of reach. They begin to picture long hours, impossible expectations, and mounting pressure. What should have motivated them instead becomes a source of anxiety.

And at that point, your role shifts. Instead of leading from a place of vision, you find yourself battling resistance — trying to convince everyone that the goal can be achieved.

There’s a smarter way.

Break It Down with the 1% Goal

1% goal

The 1% Goal is a simple mental shift that changes how your team relates to targets — and makes even the most ambitious objectives feel achievable.

Here’s how it works: Take your big goal and break it down into 1% chunks. Then break your available time into 1% chunks as well.

Let’s revisit that £500,000 sales target. Here’s what it looks like using the 1% rule:

  • 1% of £500,000 = £5,000
  • 1% of 250 working days = 2.5 days

So now, instead of aiming for half a million pounds over 12 months, your target becomes £5,000 every 2.5 days. That’s it.

Still seems a bit much? Let’s break it down further.

If your average sale is £500, then £5,000 translates to:

  • 10 new sales every 2.5 days, or
  • Just 4 additional sales per day

Now ask yourself — and your team: Can we sell 4 more items today?

More often than not, the answer will be yes. That’s the power of the 1% Goal — it shifts the focus from the daunting to the doable.

Why the 1% Goal Strategy Works

When you make goals feel achievable, two things happen:

  1. Belief increases – your team starts to feel confident that they can hit the target.
  2. Momentum builds – small wins begin stacking up, and with each success, morale gets a boost.

Belief + momentum = consistent action

And consistent action? That’s what actually drives results.

Let’s not forget the icing on the cake. You get to celebrate more often. Every time a 1% goal is achieved, it’s a win. And we all know — success celebrated is success repeated. The more you acknowledge progress, the more progress you create.

It’s not fluff. It’s neuroscience. And it’s one of the most powerful tools you can use as a business leader.

If Your Goal Is an Elephant, Here’s How to Eat It

Goals breakdown

You’ve heard the saying: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

The 1% Goal is exactly that in action. Whether your aim is to grow revenue, acquire more clients, streamline operations, or improve team performance — breaking down your objective into consistent, manageable chunks is the best way to get everyone moving in the same direction.
