The 3Rs of Goal Setting

If you’re the type of business owner that set goals, you may be starting to reach the point of the year where your goals are feeling a bit… wobbly.

By that, I mean that you haven’t been meeting the intermediate targets to get to some of your goals. Maybe you’ve dropped a few of your goals. Maybe you’ve even already forgotten that you set a few of them because this month has thrown you a few curve balls.

Well, here’s a concept I use in business consulting sessions around this time to year to remind you that the real champions of the business world aren’t actually the ones who get it right on the first go…

None of the “Rs” for goal setting is actually getting it “Right every time.” High achievers are actually the ones who are constantly Reviewing, Reflecting and Resetting their goals in a meaningful way.

Let business be a contact sport – and keep that contact with your goals up throughout the year. Reset at the frequency that you need to, and keep going. Believe me, you will achieve even more this year.

What I want to talk about today is goal setting. In my experience of working with business owners I’ve come across four kinds of people.

Four Kinds of Business Owners

  1. Those who do not believe in goal setting and they just want to flow with how things are happening because this is not how the world happens for them.
  2. The second set of people are people who have ideas. They have dreams, they have thoughts, and it’s all up there.
  3. Then I have the third set of people who believe in goal setting and when we create platforms for them, like the planning sessions or the complimentary strategic reviews, then they will absolutely enjoy writing down their goals, both personal and business.
  4. And then the fourth kind of people are the people who absolutely love goal setting and what they also love doing is actually reviewing those goals on a frequent basis.

Now, this is where I want you to make the distinction. From my personal experience and working with quite a few business owners, practically, seeing what’s really working and what’s not working, what I’ve seen is that if you are serious about the dreams that you have in your life, then goals are simply those dreams with timelines attached.

Writing Down Your Business Goals

If you are writing them down rather than just thinking about them then that itself gives you that leverage over others because it shows that you are committed to taking time out to actually make an effort to jot it down. Your brain is already getting the message that you are quite serious about these goals.

Beyond Just Writing Them Down: The Three R’s

And then it’s not just about writing them down and reviewing them at the end of the year or at the end of a substantial time period. It’s actually making contact with your goals every week, every day if possible.

And when you do that, it’s not to make sure that you’re always on track. In fact, there will be moments when you will not be on track. But when you review your goals frequently you reflect, you think about them and you question them. Is this really important to me? Because if I’m not doing it either it’s not important to me, I’m not seeing the value in it, or I just need to reset. And that’s the key point, you need to allow yourself to reset.

You need to allow yourself to get back on track rather than being guilty, rather than saying I’m not good at keeping my promises or staying on track for my goals. There are three R’s. You need to really focus on and please write them down.

  1. Reviewing your goals. Review as often as you can. If possible daily, I do that on a daily basis.
  2. The second one is Reflect. This is your thinking time. This is when you truly reflect and say, is this really meaningful to me? Because if the answer is “no”, release your headspace. The idea is not to feel guilty. And if the answer is “yes” then you know that you want to put in that effort.
  3. After that reflection, the third one is Reset. Just reset. Champions are not the ones who always get it right. They’re not the ones who set the goal and achieve it in the first time. High achievers are the ones who keep reviewing, reflecting and resetting.

And that’s what you and I need to be mindful of. That actually, if something is important to you, then how often are we making contacts with those goals and how often we are allowing ourselves to reset in a sincere way and then move forward.
